”Custom Hmong Pillows


Here's another great custom project that we are pleased to tell you about. A client came into our Albuquerque showroom on a mission...for pillows. With a little help, we created a collection of 6 original one-of-a-kind pillows from a vintage Hmong textile from Vietnam.


Each pillow has a unique pattern and the sizes were dictated by the dimensions of the textile itself. Throw on a linen back and throw in a feather-and-down insert and the Pfeifer look was complete.

If you can’t make it to Albuquerque, then how about Brazil, Africa, Japan, Vietnam, Haiti, or even the Middle East? Pfeifer Studio runs across some pretty cool one-of-a-kind finds in our travels, and for the first time ever we are making a few of them available on our website. Of course you’ll still want to stop into the studio, since there are always one-of-a-kinds you just can’t shop for online.

Our one-of-a-kind collection is filled with vintage finds, because we love their uniqueness of course. But, according to treehugger.com they are also eco-friendly and "can be the most green" of all and "require no additional resources to manufacture, are pre-off gassed and ease the load on the landfill."

For the kid inside, this Japanese Paper Kite is from the famous Hayashi family, who has been making kites in Tokyo since the Edo period. Completely handmade, it features hand painted wood block printing, and the packaging it comes in is just as fabulous.

The Cameroon stool, carved from a solid tree trunk is estimated to be from the mid-20th Century. There are areas where cracks in the wood have been patched with what appears to be clay, and other areas where nails are used for support. But what intrigues me most about the stool is how it reminds me of crossed legs and hands intertwined together as a symbol of communal strength.

We love all things Japanese. Each of their traditional crafts is an art form unto itself and every step of the creative process has a tradition and meaning associated with it, passed down through many generations.

 Handmade paper is one of their most noble art forms and an important part of Japanese culture. It also has a long history. Early in the 7th Century paper making was introduced to Japan from the Asian continent. Ever since, samurai and commoner alike used handmade paper for almost everything imaginable.

Our new paper wall hangings are a mixture of traditional techniques and contemporary design. They are created by dipping a large screen into a bath of liquid pulp made from plant fibers.

What makes Japanese paper unique is that this process is repeated many times, allowing the plant fibers to intertwine. The end result is an extremely strong sheet that can be used for many purposes.

Each is individually made, so there is some variation, but they average 38 x 93 inches. They are fitted with a steel rod at the top and base, which allows them to hang without damaging the paper.


We love their transparent, ephemeral quality and have hung them floating in our showroom. They are also beautiful hung in front of a wall (especially when painted in a strong color) or in front of a large open window.

We found these great vintage school chairs a few months back and immediately brought them into the shop for our local clients. They proved to be such a hit that we though they deserved a place in our online collection as well.

They are reclaimed pieces from China and were first used in the 1960's. A range of paint colors were not available when they were first made. The bright, distressed painted finishes were recently added.

We just received these great wooden serving utensils from Asia in our showroom. The bamboo tongs are already flying out the door (who knew?) and the huge wooden ladles are officially a hit (not surprised). My personal favorite, the little basting brushes made from frayed bamboo.

We are in a very Japanese spirit these days at Pfeifer Studio. The latest Pfeifer Find to land online is this beautiful, graphic noren in deep indigo blue, featuring a vibrant pattern created with traditional shibori tie-dye.

Visitors to our shop often ask us: What is a Noren?

A tradition in Japan, noren (split-curtains) are hung in shops and restaurant doorways to block dust and sunlight. In private homes, they are used as a room divider or doorway curtain. We love them as wall art! Hang it on a bamboo rod, easily found at any garden shop.

Designed in Japan, this elegant noren features hand-stitched designs called sashiko. This shibori tie-dying technique which originated in Japan, has been practiced for centuries in China, India, Africa and Latin America. The fabric is folded, wrapped, twisted or pleated and then secured with string before being dyed. When unbound, distinctive patterns emerge, making each piece completely unique.

Our newest arrival is an elegant Japanese serving tray in rich reddish-brown cherry bark veneer. The surface features dramatic highlights in the grain pattern, which are created by stripes of light brown inherent to the wood. This handmade tray was created in the long tradition of cherry bark veneer work, practiced in Japan for well over 1000 years. Like flower arranging and haiku, cherry bark veneer work was originally developed by the Samurai as a way to channel their bushido spirit and express their creativity. Today craftsmen take bark and pound it down into thin strips before applying the veneer to the surface of our solid wood tray. Click here to learn more.

Our elegant Red Lacquer Side Table from Vietnam is featured in the December/January issue of Teen Vogue.

A lucky contest winner in Nebraska received a total room makeover, complete with two Pfeifer Tables. The room designers worked with a palate of black, white and red, and seeing that our lacquer side table is available in all three colors, any would have worked beautifully.

Our latest Pfeifer Find from Thailand has just landed online. The new Bamboo Storage Table is a colorful, yet sophisticated design constructed from environmentally-friendly bamboo.

We often receive requests for a table with extra storage and when we came across this little number we knew that we had to have it. The lightweight table features a lid that lifts off to store pillows, throws, magazines or just about anything else!

Everyone at the studio is very excited about the arrival of our first 'Pfeifer Finds.' Although we did not design these hand rubbed lacquer pieces ourselves, we found them so delicious (not to mention a perfect match to the other styles in our collection) that we knew we had to have them.

These elegant high-gloss tables are from China and you will only find them online at pfeiferstudio.com. Available in Red, Black and an absolutely perfect shade of White, they can add a bit of glamour to any interior.

Why lacquer? The technique first originated in Asia around 3000 BC, when the Chinese found that sap from the Rhus tree could be layered onto soft woods and dried to an enamel like finish.

It was more expensive than Bronze to execute, since multiple layers have to be poured and polished until the surface takes on an luminous depth with an almost three-dimensional quality.

We think that lacquer is still fun and sexy and hope to bring more great lacquer styles to you in the future!
